Happy New Year Tennis Times Online readers!

The clocks have barely turned us over to a new decade and the professional tennis circuit is already cranking up, starting with the high profile Capitala World Tennis Championship men's exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.

Robin Soderling edged out Stanislas Wawrinka in two tiebreaks, while David Ferrer defeated the player who ended 2009 on the hottest streak, NIkolay Davydenko.  Soderling and Ferrer will now play Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, respectively. The top two seeds received byes into the semi-finals of the six man event.

Serena Williams fined $175,000 (sort of) The Grand Slam committee is expecting a check from Serena Williams for $82,500 (will the memo line read "For Foot Fault"?) for the tirade against a line judge that ended her match against Kim Clijsters in the semi-finals of the 2009 U.S. Open. While the official fine is $175,000, Serena already paid $10,000 in the days following the incident, and is now being asked to cover half of $165K with a promise of good conduct at the slams through 2011. Mini-Tennis, Major Dollars The short hard court lead up to the season's first grand slam event kicks off this week. For the ATP, that means 250 level events in Brisbane (Australia), Chennai (India) and Doha (Qatar). Yet, one of these things is not like the others - Brisbane and Chennai's prize money pools are $372K and $398K, respectively. Doha's prize money pool is just over $1,000,000! In fact, the total payout in Doha for the semi-finalists on ($380K) practically matches the payout at either of the other two events.
